Support Jesuit Ministries in Michigan and Ohio
Jesuits today are very active across Michigan and Ohio through the apostolates of education, pastoral ministry and social justice initiatives.
Ss. Peter and Paul Warming Center
The Ss. Peter and Paul Warming Center in downtown Detroit is an Ignatian ministry of people in mutual service to neighbors, many of whom live on the streets and whose realities include addiction, grief, shame, fear, impoverishment and/or mental impairment. The center provides a safe haven for several hours during the week for them to receive shelter. It also allows us to share the love of Christ and the learning only He can provide with our visitors.
The depressed economy has led increasing numbers of homeless men and women to our doors. In Detroit alone, the unemployment rate is just under 18 percent, almost twice the national average. In Cleveland, and other communities throughout the upper Midwest, the plight of the working family is similar.
Currently the Warming Center receives 40-60 visitors each day. As the weather gets colder, we anticipate that number will rise. Coffee and donuts are provided each day and when it is possible they are able to have one hot meal a week. This all depends on the gifts that come in, as well as volunteers from various parishes in the area or others who want to help at the Center.
In addition to food, visitors have access to laundry facilities, a place to pick up mail, a place to take a shower and a place to rest on a daily basis in a quiet environment away from the hustle and bustle of the city. To find out more about the Warming Center, please click here.
